Rossini meets Anish Kapoor via Salvatore Sciarrino in a cross-cultural homage to that eternal icon of female martyrdom - Joan of Arc.

Thomas Kemp directs Chamber Domaine and rising star mezzo Anna Grevelius in a live performance of Salvatore Sciarrino's 1987 orchestration of Rossini's late cantata Giovanna D'Arco in situ with Anish Kapoor's specially commissioned installation Dismemberment of Jeanne d'Arc.

'With me music inhabits a threshold region. Like dreams, where something both exists and yet doesn't exist,' notes Sciarrino. This simultaneous absence and presence is a concept etched into the Kapoor aesthetic. Much of his work explores these polarities: form and non-form, place and non-place.

Giovanna D'Arco was Rossini's most ambitious work in the cantata form. It retold the dramatic story of the 'Maid of Orleans' - the visions that drove an illiterate peasant girl to deliver her homeland from subjugation. To do justice to its full mythic weight, Rossini pulled out all the vocal stops in a 'virtual catalogue of the bel canto arsenal'.
