Cocteau in the Underworld

Brighton Festival Platform

Cocteau in the Underworld

Platform, in association with caravan, showcases
four works in progress by artists from the South
East, giving you the opportunity to help shape that work with critical feedback. The first is a semistaged performance of extracts from Cocteau in the Underworld. This new opera in development from University of Sussex-based composer Ed Hughes has a libretto by Faber-published author Roger Morris and is directed by John Lloyd Davies. Inspired by an imagined incident in the life of Jean Cocteau, the French poet dreams of the Underworld in order to recover a former lover from the dead. Confronted with characters from his past and his imagination, he is faced with a choice between love or creativity.
