The Erpingham Camp
Commissioned by Brighton Festival
The iconic Brighton Pier plays host to a wild night of riotous abandon in a promenade production of Joe Orton's outlandish The Erpingham Camp.
Erpingham runs his holiday 'empire' with missionary zeal, but when the Entertainments Officer is struck down all hell breaks loose.
The power hungry Riley seizes his chance to run the show, but the holidaymakers revolt. Order is undone as Erpingham's kingdom is
besieged by an orgy of indulgence.
Written for TV (in 1966) and adapted for the Royal Court a year later, Joe Orton's The Erpingham Camp drop-kicked Euripides'
Greek tragedy The Bacchae into the 20th century, reworking its subversive subtext to reflect a decade's conflict between conformity
and permissiveness.
Now the company that brought Harold Pinter's The New World Order to sharp relief (BF 2007) runs amok with Orton's dark farce among the pleasure domes of the Brighton Pier.
