June Tabor
The second of June Tabor's Festival concerts sees the singer approaching her performance from a different musical angle while losing none of the poise and unpredictability that make her such a mesmerising interpreter of traditional and contemporary song. She takes the stage alongside her current touring band Andy Cutting (accordion), Mark Emerson (viola, piano) and Tim Harries (double bass).
Though all are previous Tabor collaborators, this formidable trio of British folk talent came to her attention as an ensemble - 1651 - with its acclaimed 2001 instrumental album Cast a Bell. So inspired was Tabor by their uncommon rapport and inventive musicality that she invited the band to collaborate on her much lauded 2007 album Apples. Cutting's joyful drive and lift bring an attractive new dimension to Tabor's performance (and song selection, which mixes social history, mediaeval French ballads and English folk). The darker, contemplative edge of Emerson and Harries perfectly complements the emotional candour of Tabor's nuanced delivery.
'If you can't appreciate June Tabor...just stop listening to music.'
