Group Doueh & Omar Souleyman
Record label Sublime Frequencies takes in influences as far afield as Balinese Gamelan, Bollywood slide guitar and Korean agit-pop. This special showcase heads off the beaten track to present new sounds with a mix of live music and DJ sets.
The sound of the Sahara meets street level Syrian folk-pop as St George's Church provides a magical backdrop to live sets from two artists entirely new to a UK audience.
Led by enigmatic guitar man Bamaar Salmou, Group Doueh hails from Dakhla in the Western Sahara. The band's music is rooted in
the Sahrawi / Hassania traditions, yet with a fiery, independent pop-rock vibe anomalous to the rest of the region.
Omar Souleyman's signature brand of Syrian folk-pop takes in the sounds of neighbouring Iraq and Turkey. His band's rugged anthems
- soaring vocals over high-octane Syrian 'Dabke' (the regional folkloric dance music) - range from urgent to contemplative.
